Pregnancy Desk Posture

During preganancy the body changes each trimester to allow for the growing featus and therefore the safe delivery of the baby.

The hormonal and physical changes that occur in the body, can change the centre of gravity. The pregnant posture therefore adapts to allow for these changes.

Here is a few simple office or at home desk tips to help assist the changing female body;

  • Aim to maintain a neutral posture while working at a desk during all trimesters of pregnancy.

  • An office chair with adjustable back support and height should be provided in an office setting, with the option to add extra lower back support if needed.

  • Padding on the seat should be increased to deal with the increase of shifting load when the baby continues to grow and get heavier.

  • Both feet should be flat on the ground, Can use a footrest to elevate feet.

  • A comfortable distance from the desk should be maintained to allow for abdominal expansion during the pregnancy.

  • A soft mouse pad should support the wrists and the wrists elevated above the keyboard in order to avoid aggravation of carpal tunnel syndrome (a common condition during pregnancy).

  • Sit to stand desks encourages the patient to continuously change postures and positions therefore increase blood and oxygen flow to the baby.

We understand each pregnancy is different, these are just guides that may help prevent or relieve aches and pain associated with the postural adaptations.
